Ana de Almeida is an artist and author based between Lisbon and Vienna. Her practice explores the politics of memory, archival methodologies, and the intersection of personal and collective histories, often working with photography, video, installation, and performance. A central focus of her work lies in activating vernacular archives to reflect on revolutionary desire, transmission of resistance, and the shaping of political subjectivities.
In parallel, de Almeida creates live action role-playing (LARP) works that speculate on alternative political imaginaries. These participatory pieces, often developed in collaboration with other artists, extend her inquiry into historical narratives by inviting audiences to embody and rehearse new modes of collective agency, political fiction and memory-making.
She is currently pursuing a PhD at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, researching image production between the Carnation and the Velvet Revolutions. Her editorial work further complements her artistic practice, with contributions to publications and collective projects focused on decolonial and post-socialist perspectives.
Her work has been exhibited at institutions such as Camera Austria, Kunsthalle Wien, Belvedere 21, MNAC Lisbon, ICA Yerevan, CSULA Los Angeles and GHMP Prague. She is a recipient of the Austrian State Grant for Media Arts and the BES Revelação Art Prize.
